Bumble Bee's Baja Grill
Mexican, Under $10, Santa Fe

A bright, new high-ceiling restaurant with closely spaced tables and bumble bee piñatas wafting overhead, Bumble Bee's has quickly delighted locals with its super-fresh Cal-Mex style food, including mahimahi tacos, mammoth burritos with a wide range of fillings, roasted chicken with cilantro-lime rice, and char-grilled trout platters. You order at the counter, grab some snacks from the salsa bar, and wait for your number to come up. There's live jazz on Saturday nights. Beer, wine, and Mexican soft drinks are served. The plastic flatware is a bit off-putting (it breaks easily), but otherwise, this place is a real find. AE, D, MC, V. Other location: 3701 Cerrillos Rd., PHONE: 505/988-3278.

Frommer's Review

This new "beestro" offers a refreshing twist on fast food. It's actually healthy! The secret? Tacos are made Mexican style, with a tortilla folded around quality meat, fish, and poultry grilled with veggies. You pick from an array of salsas. Waist watchers can sample from a selection of salads, including one with grilled chicken and avocado. Rotisserie chicken and various burritos round out the main menu, while kids have their own options, such as the quesadillas. Diners order at a counter, and a waiter brings the food. The decor is a bit Formica-esque for my tastes, though the primary colors are fun. During warm months, I try to nab a patio table. Evenings often offer live jazz music, when folks sit back and sip beer and wine. There's also a drive-through window.

Global Province - Best of Class

A simple enough place—you can call it fast food if you like—we are much taken with the Bumble Bee, where you can get burritos, tacos, and other Spanish fare that soar above the pack. The ingredients are simply very, very fresh, and all the staff, from the owner on down, radiate such cheer that they make it extra fun to visit. For a change there is ample parking, and it’s very easy to get to once you discover Guadalupe. Just across the street, by the way, is Tulips, where you can get fancy fare (90% New American mixed with a touch of New Mexican) when you feel like putting on the dog. But you will go to the Bumble Bee in shorts, get your food in a hurry, and complete it with zesty salsas and garnishes from the back table. There is an efficient take out window, too, if that’s what you want to do.

The surprises for us were the chile-marinated roast chicken (you can see several on the spit as you wait to give your order) which easily surpasses the birds offered by the normal chicken take-out places. And, second, a burrito filled with tender, juicy lamb was a treat, offering flavors not found in the usual run of burritos. But did we mention the grilled wild Pacific mahi-mahi tacos, the succulent, slightly charred fish topped with shredded cabbage and a mysterious sauce? To achieve perfection, liberally add the superb roasted tomato and chile salsa from the back bar to all of the above. On a Saturday night, some tables are pushed aside, and musicians are installed to add to the merriment.

Billed as a "healthy Mexican grill" this neighborhood restaurant offers fresh twists on tacos and burritos served indoors, on the patio, or through your car window at the drive-through take out. (Be warned that the take out window is painfully slow: if there are more than two cars ahead of you, park and place your to-go order inside.)]

"In an out of the way spot off North Guadalupe, Bumble Bee's offers great, fresh food with fish and chicken dishes as specialties. Try the lettuce wedge; it's a meal in itself for only $5.90." J.M.S.

"BUMBLE BEE" Bob Weil and wife BJ interpret the healthy fast-food environment beautifully at their bright and airy eatery emphasizing lean meats, grilled fish, and fresh ingredients. Fans pack the drive-thru nightly for the juicy, loaded burritos and filling-yet-light tacos. The latter includes soft corn tortillas enveloping thick chunks of grilled Mahi-Mahi, avocado, cilantro, zesty pico de gallo, shredded white cabbage, and a deal-clinching twist on tartar sauce (two fish tacos, or Dos-Fish, includes beans and rice, $6.90). Add your choice of mouth-watering house salsas from the self-serve salsa bar, especially the additively smoky (medium-hot) roasted tomato. Bumble Bee's also offers heaping, crisp salads, whole rotisserie chickens ($11.90), and fabulous (locally made) Taos Cow ice cream in four flavors. This inviting, sparkling-clean joint is ideal for quick eat-in, drive-thru, or takeout.
